This is the ideal time of the year for thinking about sunrise images as the sun rises at a more reasonable hour for the lazy amongst us. However, how do you know if the sunrise will be visible and if it is will it be colourful? You could end up with lots of early mornings, vast amounts of travel to your chosen site, and all to no avail with no tangible results at the end of it. Even if the sunrise is as you hoped it may not be in the right place. Well, that’s all part of the excitement you cry. NO…… I like more certainty in my endeavours. To that end, I always plan ahead. Sometimes you are looking at a scene which you know would work if the light were better or if it was sunrise or sunset. However, you know the sun will never rise or set in the right position. So what do you do? Well, I always take the image regardless even though it may end up in the not wanted or think again folder. Then sometimes you get the urge to try out your artistic skills in a post-production software and you have that light bulb moment when it all comes together. So no getting up at some unearthly hour, setting up in the dark and praying the sun will shine…. Let the artist in you shine instead.
